hi all! must be weird to see yue^2 post here. =x ah well there's a first for everything no? ^^ thanks to everyone at the chalet for making it a... success? haha... anyhow it was a great time to talk and interact with you people. think i'll be the 1st to leave singapore if i do get into uni of mel. :( will miss all of you... once again thanks for all the memories from the bottom of my heart. *wait where's my heart?* x)

and yes back to the title. parties! hohoho... i'm catching on xy's clubbing fever. ^^ and so i shall present 2 parties for anyone who might be interested here.

1) PUNKiNUS @ St JamesPowerhouse
a bash organised by my friend from NUS business school. it's on the 13th of jan, this coming saturday. door open at 8pm to 10pm. tickets are priced at $14 with 1 complimentary drink. girls can club-hop after 10pm because all 9 clubs inside are open to girls above 18. heh. good chance to take a tour of THE St JamesPowerhouse ya?

2) Tertiary Fling @ MoS
ah well sorta like a well-known MoS event. it's supposed to be free but i have no idea where to get the tickets. it's on the 18th of jan, next next thursday night. HipHop and RnB in the main arena(only jx would wanna know this hahaha...). to get tickets you can sign up at www.whosgoing.sg . entry from 9pm to 11pm. do rmb your IC cos MoS does check.

haha... hmm i'm weird. dying to club for a bit before getting trapped in the absolutely-no-nightlife-shops-close-at-4pm melbourne... lol! bah. anyone going do tell me ya? and let's try to support xy too! *looks around* .... *hears pin drop* ok i get the point. ^^

Hello!So sorry i wasn't able to go for the countdown party. Sounds fun from eric's entry though!

Here are the details for the chalet:

Date: 4th (thur) - 6th (sat) Jan 2007

BBQ Night: 5th night? (fri)

Venue: Downtown East , Rooms A1129 & 1130

Time to meet:
Official check-in time is 4pm. Check out time is 12nn. It's not like normal checking in and out times cos it's booked through my brother's SAFRA account. I'm not sure why they have such quirky rules.

(a) To buy food: I'm not sure where is a good place, but previously in RV we all went to GIANT at Jurong East IMM. Does anybody else have any other suggestions? If not can all who wanna help gather food for us meet 1pm at Jurong East MRT station. Can someone volunteer to be in charge of food and also volunteer to pay for the food first? cos i might have to go with my brother to check in first. Can we start a list of pple who are going to buy food on the tagboard?

(b) For those who cannot join in to buy food, maybe you wanna just contact anyone who's in the tagboard Food Committee when you're free and join them. Or maybe you wanna standardise a meeting time at 4pm? Otherwise, you can actually just show up at the chalet and proceed to the rooms

Things to bring:
(1) Please prepare about $20 to pay for lodging and food and the ridiculous $1 entrance fee.Melvin has very nicely paid upfront for us first so please please don't forget to bring the money to return him.
(2) (from melvin) Bring change of clothes so we can play at the beach!
(3) Any other things you deem necessary =)

Who's going:
So far only Wu Juan and Eric have told me they're unable to go. Please let me know if you're not going for either chalet or bbq so that we know how much food to prepare.

Finance:
So far i've calculated
Lodging: $321.50
Food: $120
Carried over from class fund: $147
Total payable: $294.5
Should we separate the bill for bbq and lodging? Cos it's not very fair for those who don't stay (like gum) and those who are only able to come for bbq (jian xin) to pay the full amount.

Countdown party

Yesterday we had a countdown party at qinying's house and we had a great time playing mahjong, boggle and other lame card games that fill up the fun and excitement. Chalet is coming up soon and i hope that the class will have lots of fun there. I will not be able to go for the chalet coz overseas so have fun and all the best to everyone!

Time: Meet at 8:30pm sharp at Boon Lay MRT Station

Subsequent Events: Travel to qy's house via bus for abt 3 bus stops. Jh and qy will greet us with a friendly smile at the bus stop. we'll then decide proceed to qy's house after which we'll decide whether to take a look at the countdown @ boonlay.

What to bring: Changeover of clothes of stayover, tolietries (if u want), board games/cards, $$$ for stuff. additional snacks and tidbits are most welcomed. anyone has an extra set of mahjong?

regarding the steamboat suggestion, i think we can push it back for the next day's lunch. coz i believe it will rain and everyone will be stuck in the house. hawhaw. but of coz, there're always umbrellas and we can drop by the shopping center at boon lay.

Hello peeps!

Since we still have no conclusions, i guess i just have to take the initiative ba..
today is already the 30dec, tml will be the party, we have absolutely no time to waste yeah?
Okie, i think we should not go esplanade or anywhere, the reason is simple, we will be flattened! haha.. really, everywhere will be super super crowded that it sometimes spoils ur mood! i have tried that before.. was v excited at 1st, but the crowd really puts me off.. haha... of coz there are people who love crowd! :) okie, so for now, can we agree upon option 3?? we shall go qin ying's hse then we can play games lo! eg: MAHJONG!! hahaa.. or pictionary also can la.. then we must really play some games, can be lame, but just to get us together and high!! haha.. maybe we can play musical chairs or anything that we played during the sentosa trip? then we can get those party poppers or sparklers and we can also get champange or wine! :)
Anyway, we can go for dinner together first? i think catering is abit too short a notice.. or can we settle for steamboat? all we need is just to buy the ingredients and cook them in the steamboat! it wont be too difficult right? if not we all meet after dinner? u all tell me k?

hellow. after much discussion with some people, we've come to some plans regarding the new year countdown. we've nicely narrowed it down to 4 choices. they are as follows:

1.) watch fireworks at esplanade. meet at 9pm at marina, make way to qy's house after that and zonk.
2.) NY dinner (catering or restaurant), go countdown @ boonlay, then zonk.
3.) meet at 8plus 9 at qy house, countdown at home. then zonk.
4.) NY dinner (restaurant), marina fireworks, then zonk
5.) meet at 8pm at qy's house, dump stuff and go for mailto:countdown@, then zonk.

dinner's on your own for the odd numbered choices.

shuping qy and liping (i think) voted for 3. jianxin's spearheading 1's movement. i'm for anything except that i will only be available after 8:30pm..

as for catering, i emailed Canadian Pizza for fun regarding their party packages. if not we can juz order pizza for supper after midnite. or any other delivery service that u have in mind. we might even cook if qy doesn't mind. shups suggest going for a walk arnd the neighbourhood. qy has mahjong and sparklers (to make up for not watching fireworks i guess). and of coz there will be the all-time favourite game - cards. stayover at qy's house is confirmed. shups doesn't mind that we watch romantic comedies at her house. so the programme's endless! worse come to worse, we have a 4 teams pictionary showdown. guaranteed to last for 4 hours or more.

regarding the chalet, shuhui has nicely booked two adjacent rooms frm the 4th to 6th Jan 2007. reason is becoz 3rd is unavailable. sorry lei, it couldn't be helped. shups suggested bbq on the 2nd night (5th), which is a friday. i'll need confirmation (and opinions) regarding the people who can attend.

PLS MAKE IT A POINT TO ATTEND THE CHALET AND STAYOVER! coz it will be the last gathering before, erm, whatever happens after. whether or not this will be successful will depend on everyone! the xmas party was successful, so lets hope the NY countdown and chalet would be too.

New Year Party

This sunday is the last day of 2006. To round up the 2 years we have been together as a class, we are having a countdown party @ my hse. Considering the special occassion, i am sure that many will have plans for dinner etc..so i think everyone can come my house at night. Would 9 pm be a suitable time? Please blog to tell me a more suitable time if u think that is too early or too late. As for activities, we can play mahjong or cards thru the night. If everyone is bored, we can always go shuping's hse but she would only be home at 10pm that night. If we want to indulge in the new year atmosphere, we can always go to boon lay cc to attend the countdown party there. Oh, did i mention that it is a stayover party? As for food or snacks, anyone has any suggestions?

Yesterday's xmas party was great and i throughly enjoyed it!! :)
Here goes the honour list:
1) xxy - for lending us her lovely hse for the party, renting the VCD and help us upload photos! and her mum for helping us with the cleaning up!
2) SAM - for being a wonderful cook!
3) Eric - for his cheesecake and jellies!
4) Mel - for ordering the logcake and cheese brownie!
5) Wu juan - for collecting the logcake and cheese brownie!
6) Shu hui - for the wonderful egg tarts! + the nice cup of milo she made for me =)
And last but not least, all for us for making the party a success!

btw, xxy actually slept w/o a blanket coz mel and i kopped it up in our dreams! haha.. luckily i discovered it early or else she might freeze to death! haha..

i have ardy mass sent everyone who is supposed to go regarding the details on the venue and time of meeting. In my sms i said 6pm coz i sent b4 i read the latest entries by xinyi but you all can come on 6pm as well coz i will be at xinyi's house early so if you all reach at 6pm can juz give me a call so i can go down and fetch you all up. Coz i am thinking maybe not everyone checks the blog so i assume that some people thought the meeting time is 6pm. Whether is 6pm or 7pm does not matter la, personally i feel that 6pm meet is better coz 7pm meet and if some people even later than 7pm then dinner super late lor haha. So try to come on 6pm and please be punctual coz i dun want to make too many trips from the bukit panjang interchange to xinyi's house so often.

I have made a cheese cake for the christmas party. Hope it is nice coz i haven taste it myself. My mum and i made it (even though mostly is my mum's work haha). Should be good la coz she made b4 and it is good haha, so dun worri about how it tastes. If nothing goes wrong, shld be making 果冻 (aka jelly) also.

I seriously dunno who is CONFIRM going coz some people never tag on blog to vote for stuff and never sms me. So i assume everyone is going except:

Xmas gift exchange

Hey peeps!

Regarding the xmas gift exchange.. can we settle the way it will be carried out?
i need to buy a pressie soon~! hee :)

1) Everyone just buy a non-gender specific gift. then on tt day, all gifts will have a number and they will be placed under the xmas tree (if there is one) or any corner in the house. then we'll have a time for gift exchange where everyone picks a number in a container and collects the relevant gift?

2) Everyone buys a gift and on tt day, we just randomly do gift exchange in any pairs? but if there is an odd number then it will be very weird?

3) Draw lots or assign 1 to 1 for gift exchange? this one will require confirmed attendence.
this is not impossible acutally. one person can coordinate then he/she randomly pairs up people in the class who are going then sms to let the person know lo?

Personally, i prefer 1 as its less of a hassle! =)
I need all of your help by voting (1, 2 or 3)! hee.. thanks alot and i hope i can get a reply asap so i know roughly what to buy? thanks!

Do you all want me to order sushi from sakae sushi? Coz i can order from cck lot 1 and then bring to xinyi's house on that day itself (to add some variety to the dinner).

okay i have this chef friend, who could help us prepare the food for our christmas party if you guys want.. it will definitely be cheaper than outside cos he's sort of doing this as a favour. um we talked about some possible dishes that he can whip up for us:

-potato salad
-turkey, stuffed or not
-rosemary and thyme lamb
-nachos and cheese
-garlic bread, the bread will be homemade and stuff the garlic spread is also prepared by himself
-fruit punch

just some suggestions.. if you guys want to get him to prepare, he will just be working in my kitchen, so delivery and all that i can work out with him. and you guys can request certain dishes and i can ask whether he can do it. and mel might get us a logcake from some bakery near her house.

yeah, i gotta give a confirmation by tuesday whether we want him to do it or not so he can prepare. i'll post again regarding the price and stuff!

Hey i was looking forward to the party until i suddenly realised i can't go anw coz my sis's coming back on that very night sigh. so i hope there's a new yr party which i can go to.

Anw melissa and i are carolling with hc choir and alumni (known as hc voices) at Fullerton this yr frm 21st-25th dec at 7.30 nightly 21st-24th and afternoon on the 25th. Since mel won't be able to join u guys til after carolling on 23rd (unless she decides to abandon carolling for xmas party), why not the class comes down to watch/listen to us carol on the 23rd before going to xxy's hse? Listening to carols gives just the right holiday cheer and xmas spirit u'll be singing along to old favourites like jingle bells, deck the halls and more (gosh i sound like a run of the mill advert). Puts u in the right mood for a subsequent xmas party.

Anw personally i really enjoy carolling and hope to be able to share the xmas joy with as many ppl as possible and i believe it's a really enjoyable and light-hearted occasion (shuhui can bear testimony to that she came last yr ;) ) So if ever any of u are free on one of these days and happen to be ard cityhall/raffles area just drop by fullerton and pay us a visit? Fullerton's a nice posh place too better than ritz haha.

Gift Exchange

Regarding the gift exchange, do you all want to bring the presents and do a random exchange or do you all want to buy presents for the person you are assigned to prevent the problem of getting a present that is not suitable for you due to the possibility of a imbalance of the number of gals and guys in the party.

For me, i would prefer the random exchange one, so the present you all bring please dun be too gender specific such as earrings. Imagine a guy getting that present :D

we need the "attendance" (can't find another better term... mabbe... guests list for the party?) to see whether there is a need to specify who to get what kind of presents. this is to prevent anybody from receiving something that doesn't appeal to his/her gender.

so, if its a 1:1 ratio, then the guys can get for the girls and vice-versa. sweet.

[edit]: other options currently under considerations are 1.) drawing lots 2.) encouraging everyone to buy presents that are not gender-specific. people pls do come online to discuss.

Christmas Party Details

Here are the details for christmas party:

Venue: Xinyi's house

Meeting place: Bukit Panjang Interchange

Time: 6pm

Date: 23 Dec (xinyi cannot make it on 24 dec)

Food: Here are 2 options. One is potluck, the other is to cater food. Personally, i feel that potluck may not be that successfully coz the food may turn cold when a person who is living far away brought the food to xinyi's house. And also the food may also not be a wide variety, for example, 2 people may bring fried bee hoon as the food.

I am thinking of catering food and i want to ask whether u all want:

1. A christmas set/package offered by catering food service

2. Fast food like pizza, KFC family combo and sushi (party size, can order from sakae sushi) + log cake + (if possible) turkey from catering food service or some other place...

Which one you all prefer?

Ordering fast food and sushi i feel is easy and not troublesome but not everyone likes to eat fast food. A christmas package is good in the sense we can have a wide variety of food but the price may not be cheap.

Also, another thing i would like those people who are coming to do is to bring a wrapped present to xinyi's house so we can have gift exchange! Well...quite fun for each of us to get a random present from unknown person haha.

Can u all decide which option u all want or any other comments u can give to make the dinner better? Then we can move on to find the catering food service and order food.

As usual, please bring cards and board games if possible.

For those people who cannot come for the christmas party, please sms me so i know who is coming and who is not coming. So the ordering of food can go smoothly.

Christmas Party Suggestions

After some online discussion with liwen, we have come out with some ideas on christmas party and hopefully they can come true

I heard from suwai that when she was in river valley in sec sch, shu hui booked a function room in her dad's company to celebrate christmas so why not we have it there? Of course need shu hui to ask her dad to do us this favour but i think if the christmas party is held there b4 then why not this year too?

Some ideas on christmas party (dunno if acceptable by the class or not, but to me, must have this games though childish)

- Musical Chairs. To play this, we need some CD player or radio in the function room to play some music and press STOP and we can have all the fun squeezing people off the chair. AND DO FORFEIT!!! HAHAHAHA

- Stepping of balloons. Tie one/two balloons on both legs and try to step on other balloons! The losers need to pick some forfeit to do from a box or something.

- Pass the parcel. Somewhat same as musical chairs, but i think it is also quite thrilling and fun.

Although the above games are also played in birthday parties and may sound lame and childish, i thought they are really fun and thrilling haha. Post your comments on these ideas.

I really hope the christmas party can be successfully held.

Regarding the countdown party on 31 dec, we suggest to stay over at someone's house, probably xinyi's house. Can we have like a party theme for the stayover (or even the christmas party)?

Regarding the chalet, melvin suggested we push it backwards by one day so we could participate in the juniors' campfire. It'll be more expensive cos weekends are considered peak. Off peak it's $72/ night and peak is $84.45/night. So let's take a poll whether we wanna delay the hotel. Also, currently the class fund is sufficient to pay for only one room for 2 nights. Do you all wanna book 2 rooms and top up or share one room? Please reply asap!

erm.. are we going to crash the j1 orientation next year? if we're planning to crash the orientation (or play bball at the same time) then mabbe we can push the chalet date SLIGHTLY backwards, probably 5th to 7th. coz there's also the campfire night which is supposedly on the 4th rightos? the mass dances and school songs will all be all on that night. lets not forget abt meeting the grandjuniors (although it doesn't sound quite appealing to me) HAHAHA. but all in all, if we're going to crash next year's orientation, then i think its more appropriate to push the chalet to the 5th or something. (:

CHALET!!!

hihi! For those who weren't at the sentosa outing, is chalet from 3rd(wed) to 5th(fri) Jan 07 ok? The rationale for choosing january instead of febuary is that (a) alot of people are going overseas in dec (b) it's off peak in jan and cheaper. PThe chalet will be paid for by the excess class fund that mysteriously appeared possibly due to over zealous collection of funds by the bio department (and our class treasurers) . So we have about $256 to spare. I can book under my brother's status as retired ns man and get it for $65/night for one room. So 2 rooms for 2 nights would be about $260 just nice. But i have to make sure everyone in the class is agreeable because this money belongs to everyone, please raise any objections by 4th Dec 06 (that's prom night).That's all!

Sentosa outing today was really fun! Too bad teng chuan wasn't there to play murderer, his favourite game..haha but it was quite fun playing all the dog and bone and simon says and getting caught on camera in weird and suggestive positions (no thanks to gong yue ; ) ). Wei jian even came all the way from jb! haha the food was good too..thank you qinying for preparing all the sandwiches! ~woohoo~ let's do this again sometime after prom!

Bring umbrella, any card games such as UNO, poker and board games. I think one set of poker cards is not enuf to play with so many people around so can bring more sets of poker cards so more people can play bridge haha.

I have told kk to bring boggle, a very nice and fun game that needs paper and pencil/pen to play. I will bring extra so more people can join in the fun. Hopefully kk remembers to bring though! He might be too happy that exams are FINALLY over that he forgot to bring haha.

And the meeting is at 10.30am at harbourfront MRT, juz to repeat previous entries. If possible, bring stuff there to eat like some snacks or what, so that we can also eat some snacks when it really rains.

hey! maybe it's a bit late to post this but don't worry about the rain! there are two huge indoor halls at siloso beach where we can camp and play cards etc..which we will most likely do also in the sun just that we're outdoors. so bring out all the board games (other than monopoly) and cards (other than the poker cards) you've got! okay im sorry i just thought the previous layout was kinda gloomy so i thot id add some colour to it. if anyone strongly objects to this new one, i have saved the old html so we can always change it back. i have no idea what the relevance of the layout is to our class, haha but its kinda bright and happy. and im sure liwen likes the colour scheme anyway :D

Hello everyone!

I think picnic is a good idea. I can bring jelly for dessert haha. And for suggestions on class activities, i am thinking whether we can go ice-skating or do something special. Even though not everyone likes ice-skating and it is on the west some more so people living in the east will suffer, but i think it is quite fun. Last time can organise an east coast park ardy so going to the west for ice-skating can also be done bah haha. The cost is about $10+ i think.

Can we stay-over at someone's house and have bbq? This again needs time and people to collate and call up the company to order food and make arrangements but it is juz another suggestion.

Hello! Long time nv come here le. Talk about the chalet 1st. I guess we have a great time at the chalet and the attendance is rather good. We are kind of bad for not going to apollo outing but nvm, cycling in the park is more fun! hahaz. Dunno when we will be having another class outing. I am thinking of ice skating lah...but then many ppl might not like this idea, coz in the 1st place the ice skating place is in the west so ppl living in east not fair to them. Some more need to spend whole day there then worth it and the cost is around $10+ per person lor. Risk of getting bruises and other injuries too. Hahaz, dunno lah, but hope can have another outing again. I dun mind another movie outing =D

Rant of An Overly Paranoid Person

Firstly some afterthoughts about my previous post-- in the aftermath of the bio promos, the teachers did decide to help some of the F-ers pass(NOT A VULGARITY, means people who got the F grade). Anyway, through some miracle of God (or moderation) I managed to scrap an E. Wow... i passed, I'm in shock.

Moving on, it has come to my attention that other people other than our class people have started reading my previous rant.

While this may all seem fine and dandy at first, after some deep thought (about 10 seconds of it), I decided that this overexposure would only be harmful. Why? Because it won't take long for the resourceful bio teachers to find that post at the rate this is going. Much as I'd like them to be aware of their faults, I'm sure they would be less than delighted about my style of writing and the way I addressed some points. Moreover, after they discover my not-so-secret-anymore identity, I'm sure some actions would be undertaken which would not improve my standard of living in HwaChong Institution.

I realise that a possible solution would be to delete the post, but that would be such a shame, because at least with my post, my class blog would have memory of FOUR recent posters. Variety you see, its more coveted than you think. Furthermore, moving my post is not an option because that would mean *shudder* , CREATING MY OWN BLOG! The horror. Anyway, so you see, I have no choice but to leave my post.

Thus in order to save my skin, I decided that only method is feasible and plausible, henceforth I extend this plea to all readers of my previous post. If ever you are approached by any member of the BIO FACULTY (see below), PLEASE DENY ANY EXISTENCE OF MY POSTS OR MYSELF FOR THAT MATTER.

Rant of A Bio 'O' Student

(disclaimer: if you're a bio teacher stop reading. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. The author will not bear responsibility for any mental or physical injury caused by reading this entry. Any resemblance to real life characters is intentional but the author couldn't care less. Exaggeration is likely and may be considered almost truth. That time of the year is upon us again, whether you dread it or long for it, end of year exams can be said to be the most important event on a student's calender. However, the outcome often leaves much to be desired. Much as I'd like to say that I've studied hard and done my best, but that would be lying.

Then again, the issue of my laziness is another affair, what is much more important is the attitude of Bio teachers in our school. Don't get me wrong, I personally feel the Bio department is the most competent among all the subject departments and the teachers have truly put in a lot of effort in teaching and preparing the lessons. Their teaching methods while strict (and sometimes downright cruel) cannot be faulted. However, their handling of the exam leaves much to be desired.

Firstly, the conducting of the exam itself. One fine Thursday morning, 398 bio students (give or take 5) hauled ass to school to take the bio exam. All seemed fine and dandy until the students actually got into the hall. After that, it seems as if instead of the 17 year olds (16 for you late monthers) were all of a sudden 5 year old kindergarten children again. Somehow, the teachers felt compelled to give us a step-by-step guide to pre-exam preparation, as though without their instruction we would be lost souls in the exam hall.

"DON'T touch your booklets until we say so"
"DON'T write your name until we say so"
"DON'T turn over until we say so"
"DON'T talk"
"NOW write your name on the first booklet"
"DID I tell you to write on the foolscap?"

Commands and orders pelted down upon us like raindrops in a thunderstorm. Although exam integrity and rules must be respected, such ruthless enforcement is unneccessary. As the teachers constantly remind us, we are 'supposed' to be thinking, mature young adults, aren't we allowed some degree of autonomy? It's not as though we haven't taken exams before. NEWSFLASH: WE KNOW WHAT TO DO! A simple statement such as "Remain silent and fill in your particulars while waiting for the exam to start" would be sufficient. Reprimanding students for even the most mundane and tiniest of details, like writing one's name on foolscap is pointless and only serves to shake up the student before the exam and disrupt his/her concentration. Same goes for students that are late. Don't you think they have suffered enough? Imagine the agony of being waking up late, dreading the time you see on the alarm clock, sweating it out while the bus inches along Bukit Timah Road (which is not exactly famed for smooth traffic in the morning). The student is already a bunch of nerves once he/she reaches the hall, a stern look would suffice as a reprimand. No need to lash out and disturb them even more. After all, don't the teachers want us to be in peak condition to take the test so that we can perform WELL AND GET GOOD MARKS?

This brings me to the difficulty of the exam paper. On this fine Wednesday afternoon, we got back our bio paper. However, even before I could fathom how badly I flunked, the bio teachers were already on the defensive. Apparently, certain students were given the opportunity to voice their opinions on the exams in a school admin survey and some were of the opinion that it was too hard. The head of department maintained her position that the bio test was do-able and geared towards the A-level standard. Fine, that's your opinion and you're entitled to one. However, she goes on to say that people who have beef with the exams should confront her and say it to her face. Pardon me if I'm wrong, but the last time I checked, people in survey have a right to give their opinions anonymously. They don't have to go to you and tell you "Guess what? I rated your exam a 10 on the scale of 1-10 where 10 is OMGWTHHOWDOYOUDOTHISPAPER". Moreover, the action proposed by the Bio HoD was ludricous as anyone foolhardy enough to do such a thing (means tell it to her face that bio is too !@#%&*! hard), must have lost all desire to live. Furthermore, what's the point of confronting you? Is the school admin lying? Are the survey results faked? Would the students telling you direct that the paper is hard any different from the school admin telling you the students think the paper is hard? Is as though the teachers don't want the admin knowing the paper is hard. I'm not suggesting anything, but hey, WHY THE BIG FUSS?!

Anyway, about the degree of difficulty, let's do some statistical analysis. We have roughly 400 students taking bio. If my memory and eyesight didn't fail me, 211 students failed the bio promos judging by A level standards. 211/400 translates to 52.75% of the cohort. So chances are, in the auditorium, if you passed, the person sitting next to you failed. Hmm, so what does this mean for bio?

I dunno, maybe..... the test is too hard for the AVERAGE student?

But wait, I hear cries that there are students who did well. Oh wow, the council vp got B? Ok, so that's a sizable achievement, with all her responsiblities, she must have done a good job of splitting her time between studying and activities to perform so well. Congrats, but THAT DON'T PROVE A THING. Let's see, assuming that B and C is 'doing well', we have 9/400 = 2.25% of the cohort who did well. 2.25% is a bloody minority for crying out loud! Since when do people form opinions based on results from minorities? 1% of Singaporeans do not have access to sanitation, does it mean the rest of the nation is wallowing in their own faeces? So how can they arrive at the conclusion that the test is do-able? It only shows that Stephanie and co. is in a class of their own. GET A HINT: WHEN HALF THE COHORT FAILS YOUR PAPER, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.

It is not safe to attribute the reason for failure to the ineptitude or laziness of students. Don't you find it just a bit strange if HALF THE COHORT chooses to not study bio? Sure during the analysis every question seems do-able and within the syllables, but I feel the teachers have overlooked something while setting the paper --- the thinking process. Sure the questions seem not too hard if you spare a thought, but FOR A 2 HOUR PAPER EVERY MINUTE IS PRECIOUS! I don't want to waste 3-5 minutes just to work out the probability in a 1 mark mcq question. Sure i can skip that, but if i skip every thought-provoking question in the paper, I could've finished in 10 seconds. Then again, the teachers argue that the questions are mostly of A-Level standard with only a few challenging ones to sieve out the better students. Congrats, the better students are those who passed. Why? BECAUSE EVERY QN IS CHALLENGING BECAUSE OF THE BLOODY TIME NEEDED TO PROCESS IT. Everyone take out your bio mcq booklet, turn to page 21, question 12. (for those lazy to, it's the bloody bee question). What's so amazing is that the diagram and introduction to the question takes up half the page and the question takes up one line. While i'm no stranger to long and tough mcq questions, but you have to wonder, when a bio booklet takes up 25 pages for 20 mcq questions, is there a problem?

Not every student can be a Stephanie, or a Yi Yang. The average student would be stumped upon seeing new and foreign information. Even though it may be related to the topic of learning, but then again, one still needs time to contemplate and decide the accurate answer. Same goes for structured, is it not enough that we have to write 4 keywords (which often end up as 4-5 lines of text) for 2 marks? You have to make us think long and hard just to decide what the hell the question is talking about? In a test, you can have either challenging questions but give more time, or have straightforward ones but give less time. YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH. A-level papers have smatterings of easy to do and point blank regurgitation questions all around the paper for a reason --- they want students to pass. Not because they lack imagination or whatnot. While the teachers may feel the need to flaunt their creativity and expertise in the field, the promo exam paper is not your canvas for expression. Sure it all seems straightforward while setting, but in exam conditions, with the clock winding down and the question text just getting longer and longer, even the simplest of questions can be a killer.

After much brainstorming, i have came up with a simple procedure to setting exam questions.

1. Set the paper
2. Take out stopwatch
3. Find other Bio teacher
4. Start timing
5. DO THE PAPER
6. Stop at 2 hour mark
7. Note point of completion
8. Repeat experiment 3 times to reduce experimental error, bearing in mind that the target ought to be changed everytime.
9. Mark the scripts
10. Reject all papers with a score lesser than 90%

As observed, all it takes is a simple experiment to test the "do-ability" of the paper, and what's more, the bio teachers get to relive their days as a student once more! Wow, two birds with one stone, they ought to give it a try sometime.

After the Great Slaughter (marking) and the Mass Mourning (release of papers) the entire cohort of bio students in the auditorium held their collective breaths as the Bio HoD mentioned the magical word "MODERATION". However, as sighs of relief resonated around the auditorium, the HoD proceeds to drop the bombshell. Apparently, they might not be helping the F graders jump grade to an O, in fact from the way she put it, moderation seemed to be more for helping the B's and C's reach A's and B's so that they can have their precious S paper class next year.

Pardon me but WTF?! Are the bio teachers implying that the people who didn’t do well deserved it and hence should be left as they are, while those that are already topping the table be given the extra boost to further highlight their greatness? That’s like having tax cuts for the rich and not for the poor because the latter don’t deserve it. Perhaps some thinking should actually be done as to where their priorities should be…. Having more elite students or having more people passing the exam.

Biology could possibly be the most interesting of the 3 sciences offered in Hwachong. Yet mere mention of Biology is enough to elicit groans from most of the students taking it. Is this the way education is meant to be? The bio notes itself are enough to break the back of any student, literally. (My bio file is already capable of crushing even the hardiest of beetles into pulp) Is bio meant to be remembered as the ultimate mugger subject? Sure the teachers can claim understanding is more important than memorization but that’s a highly ambiguous statement which only serves to cover up the fact-intensive nature of the syllables. Understanding respiration is a relatively moderate task, but when you have to know the 10 steps in glycolysis and how some blahblahblah-phosphate becomes another blahblah-3-phosphate, then it becomes an epic feat indeed in the eyes of many.

Well I’ve reached the end of my rant and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I suffered writing it.

hello everyone! So many people were LATE for the dinner at pizza hut! -_- Anyway, i haven had pizza hut for a long time liao, so the dinner was great! (although no special promotion or what...)

MAF was FUN! Hahaz, the "stoning" session at the terraces, the sparklers, the song session, dance session...the GRAND light-up...everything is so fun.

Holidays ending soon, dun mug until faint but i really hope our class can do very well for promos lah...

i juz hav to say some comments to quite old happenings.. firstly i enjoyed the fish & co dinner..it was v fun n the atmosphere was gr8..hoped everyone had a gd time..den so glad tt the cookie baking was so SUCCESSFUL! prove how united our class can b at times..hope our teachers din throw them down the dustbins or let them rot in a corner..

sighs..left onli a few daes of holidaes..hope everyone can enjoy the last few daes n dun mug too hard..if mug till sian liao den come here n blog..ahhaha..hope our class can soar in promos n gd luck to everyone in advance..

Hey guys! hahaz.... just wanted to say that i really enjoyed the dinner on mondae 8 august! its realli fun to be there! even though i din go sleepover i felt realli relaxed and happi just being crappi for a few hours! Love ya guys! Well, at first i tot i felt good being in council while being less close to class, but now i noe i feel even better in s77! i can crap, can tok, can laugh disgustingli, can act cute with much more ease.... watever! its just nice to be around u ppl! and also long time since i can be so carefree. (although i din like the mushrooms and the mixed veggie) hahaz.... Hope u guys loved it and love me as much as i do to ya!

Wow, nobody actually blog for the past 10 days...so i shall revive the dead blog here. Anyway, it seems like everyone is very serious about PW work and it makes me very guilty...haiz, i think i shall start to collect my primary data soon, lol...

Ok, juz to recommend you all to watch mr and mrs smith this movie, coz it is excellent! Watched this movie with melvin, lei lei, shu ping, CJ and kwong ee. Kind of dramatic comedy...hahaz, laughing throughout the movie. But the ending is kind of fake lah...coz two of them are like killing so many people...which seems impossible...ok nvm, movies are supposed to be like that coz they dun want to eliminate the possibility of mr and mrs smith 2...hahaz :D

hahaz, myriad was fun and excellent...i love the SYF songs and the songs with the actions included...kind of make the whole performance not so sianz...and i love the high note being sung...hahaz, and of cuz it is not sleep-inducing lah...the performance is amazing and i love it! hahaz :D

Anyway, physics enrichment camp is finally over on 31 May, overall, it is quite good lah...the visit to research lab and physics quiz...haha, for the physics quiz, hwa chong got 2nd!!! AJC got 1st and NYJC got 3rd, so not bad lah...
